DIY Painted Ceramic Planter with supplies from Target

It’s always fun to find a new piece of home decor at Target, but as a DIY kind of gal it’s even better when I can make it myself. Target’s line of Hand Made Modern products makes it easy! In one aisle I found everything I needed to create this stylish painted planter.

Use a foam brush to coat the entire ceramic planter with the shimmer acrylic paint. It goes on light so I painted a thin base layer, let it dry, and then painted a second layer. Acrylic paint dries fairly quickly, but you can use a hair dryer to speed up the process if you’re as impatient as I am.

Once the paint is completely dry, use the washi tape to outline the pentagons you want accented in the metallic paint.

Use the washi tape to guide you as you paint the metallic accents. The metallic paint goes on thick on most surfaces, but it took three coats to get the coverage I wanted on this ceramic planter. To get the best coverage it’s important to let each layer dry before applying another coat of paint. When you’re happy with it, carefully peel off the washi tape.

The washi tape works a lot like painters tape, leaving you with nice clean lines.

I love how it turned out! By adding some flowers to the planter it brightens up any space I put it.

  1. This a super cute idea. I like finding ways to make the things I see in the store and being able to put a twist on it. Thanks for sharing!
